Spotlight on NoHo’s Architecture & Design Industry

NoHo is a unique place in the city. Here we live, work and interact in-and-amongst a built environment of meandering alleyways, historic and modern structures, and cobblestone streets that gives our neighborhood its special character.  A place where elements of the past, present and future converge.

It’s no surprise, then, that NoHo has emerged as a center for architects and designers. Their work contributes to, and draws inspiration from, NoHo’s surroundings.

We asked the architects and interior designers in the area to share their thoughts on NoHo, to tell us a bit about their firm and why they set up shop in the neighborhood. Here’s what they told us…

Ohlhausen DuBois Architects

Briefly describe your firm.

We create simple, elegant, contemporary spaces for living and working. We focus on how spaces feel – invigorating or restful, expansive or focused, lively or tranquil.

When and why did you decide to locate your firm in NoHo?

We’ve had our office on East 4th Street since 1989. The remarkable collection of buildings on Lafayette Street was a big draw – Colonnade Row, the Public Theater, the DeVinne Press Building, Hardenberg’s Schermerhorn Building, Flagg’s Engine Company 33 and Sullivan’s Bayard-Condict Building. They represent a golden age of architecture in New York City.

Three words to describe NoHo?

Authentic. Sophisticated. Simpatico.

DIAD ARCHITECTURE

Briefly describe your firm.

Our work varies in size and type, but creativity, attention to detail and clarity in communication are constants in the process, from initial concept through habitation. In each project we strive to find harmony with site and strike a balance between the pragmatic considerations of construction and the pursuit of ideas.

What is your favorite building in NoHo?

Favorite building is hands down the Bayard-Condict Building. I make it a point to walk by it most days of the week, I marvel at it every time.

Three words to describe NoHo?

Uplifting. Inspiring. Captivating.

Andrew Wilkinson Architects

Briefly describe your firm.

We are a small, but expanding design-driven architecture firm. Our proudest projects are the most difficult ones. We recently completed Bar Goto on the Lower East Side – soon to open! – on a very tight budget, but with a great deal of design work!

What is your favorite building in NoHo?

We really like the parking lot of architecture on Bond Street…a joy to walk everyday.

Three words to describe NoHo?

Exciting. Architectural. Historical.

Helpern Architects

Briefly describe your firm.

We are an architecture, planning, and interior design firm of 30 that produces great buildings and interiors for education, religious institutions, hospitality, and apartment living. We are especially good at historic preservation and updating fine old buildings.

What is your favorite building in NoHo?

The DeVinne Press Building, where we are located. We tip our hat to Andy and Robert Fisher, who continue their father’s legacy in the district.

Three words to describe NoHo?

Changing. Energetic. Surprising.

Katie Lydon Interiors

Briefly describe your firm.

We are a full-service boutique residential interior design firm that work with architects, contractors, and landscapers. We are experienced in renovating and decorating townhouses, apartments and houses, and we’ve completed dozens of projects throughout the city, the Hamptons, Westchester, and beyond.

What is your favorite building in NoHo?

The Cable Building (where our office is located) is a favorite! We also really love the Puck Building, which we can see from our office windows.

Three words to describe NoHo?

Bustling. Diverse. Ever-changing.

Clodagh Design

Briefly describe your firm.

We are an international multi discipline design firm. We work with architects and interior designers across the board in residential, commercial, retail and hospitality projects. We are just finishing the Six Senses Spa Douro Valley in Portugal, which is going to be beautiful. We are especially proud of how it celebrates the heritage and authenticity of the wine region while being completely fresh and glamorous.

Do you have a favorite space, or place, in NoHo?

My favorite spaces in the neighborhood are places like Temple Bar and Il Buco. Temple Bar is hidden and slightly out of the way. It’s discrete and perfect for quiet conservations over great cocktails and snacks. Il Buco is a sexy rustic Italian joint and great for people watching. Just last week I saw Andre Leon Talley holding court at one of the outside tables.

Three words to describe NoHo?

Creative. Dynamic. Communal.
