As part of New York City’s war on rats and bid to clean up the streets, DSNY has announced a major expansion to containerization requirements. Previously, businesses setting out prior to 8:00 PM, chains, and food businesses were all required to begin using containers for their trash.
Now, ALL stores, regardless of hours, industry, location, and size will be required to use containers, like trash bins with a lid. Beginning on March 1st, 2024, the rule will go into effect. There will be a one month grace period, with fines starting April 1st, 2024.
DSNY does not seem to have an official notice posted on their website yet, but NBC 4 NYC has a nice primer on what to expect here. We will update this page when we have more information from DSNY.
We know businesses have questions, like where you can store your bins, how many you need, etc. We don’t have all the answers from DSNY yet. We highly recommend getting your bins early in case they are hard to locate closer to the deadline. Additionally, we encourage you to start talking to your private carter now to make sure you’re ready.
We will continue to send out updates as we get closer to March 2024.
