Last month, the NoHo BID was honored to join NYC DOT, Councilmember Erik Bottcher, State Assemblymember Deborah Glick, former Councilmember Carlina Rivera, and the family of Basquiat for a special afternoon. Great Jones Street between Bowery and Lafayette Street is now officially Jean-Michel Basquiat Way. It was a beautiful October day, and the street outside the studio, owned by Andy Warhol, where he spent the last few years of his life was absolutely packed with fans of his work, neighbors, artists and creatives of every stripe to hear about the impact of this legend. After gathering at the artist’s studio building, the crown moved over to the corner to officially unveil the new sign.
Thanks to our partners at NYC DOT for this great recognition of a NoHo icon and the unique role our neighborhood’s played in the City’s creative history.
