Death for Five Voices is based on a historic event: On October 16, 1590 Prince Carlo Gesualdo entrapped and brutally murdered his wife, Maria D’Avalos, and her lover, Fabrizio Carafa, at the Gesualdo home, the Palazzo San Severo in Naples. This new musical drama explores the complex artistic personage of Carlo Gesualdo, a groundbreaking composer of the late Renaissance, and investigates how his creative internal life and subsequent compositions may have been related to his brutal external actions. A senior and a daughter of immigrants, she wants to know the real story of the past not just the version that’s included in her history textbooks. Textbooks that don’t include the stories of people like her and her friends. What if she could record the stories of today and write the history that future generations studied? What if she told the true story As she examines the lives of her peers and finds them struggling with violence, broken families, love and loneliness, she discovers the question she is afraid to answer – is this how her generation is going to be remembered?
