Cherchez La Femme: The Musical
Ellen Stewart Theatre | 66 East 4th Street (2nd Floor)

It’s reckless. It’s rhythmic. It’s romantic.  A madcap adventure featuring the music of August Darnell (AKA Kid Creole and the Coconuts) and Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band! Set in New York City and the Caribbean in the 1980s, Cherchez La Femme is a  musical extravaganza that tells the story of one man’s loss and another man’s gain and the powerful women who make it all possible. The show explores dark themes (abandonment, sibling rivalry, unrequited love) and light themes (sexual healing, the pursuit of happiness, the smell of success) but never without inviting you to shake your head and tap your toes to infectious neo-urban-jungle grooves.

Material Witness
First Floor Theatre | 74a East 4th Street

In Material Witness, Spiderwoman Theater, regarded as one the most influential Native theatre companies “in the history of the country” (Oskar Eustis, Public Theater), turns their “story-weaving” dance-theatre to issues of violence against women in Indigenous communities.  Weaving together the real-life experiences of a multigenerational cast that also includes Native actors from Canada, the collaborative piece celebrates courage and generates healing.  Stalwarts of the downtown performance scene, Spiderwoman, cited for their “rollicking humor” by The New York Times, are marking their 40th anniversary.
